A funding partnership between the City of Revelstoke and the Province to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion through a major intersection in this community was announced today by Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone.
“Congestion at Victoria and Mutas intersections was causing traffic to back up on the Trans-Canada Highway – especially during the busy summer months,” said Stone. “The construction of a roundabout and associated improvements will prevent collisions at the Highway 1 and Victoria Road intersection by reducing the likelihood of queues extending through the highway intersection.”
The City of Revelstoke is leading this project, which is already well underway, with completion expected this spring. The Government of B.C. will provide up to $700,000 to the City of Revelstoke through the Community Safety Enhancement Program. The entire project is estimated to cost $2.1 million.
“The City of Revelstoke is grateful to the Government of B.C. for providing up to $700,000 towards the Roundabout Project,” said Revelstoke Mayor Mark McKee. “The money for this project will help the city ensure the continued safety of the residents and visitors to our community, now and well into the future.”
In 2015, the ministry added a traffic signal timing system called Automax, which improves traffic flow on the Trans-Canada Highway and reduces congestion during high traffic volume periods. Dual turn lanes from Victoria Road to the Trans-Canada Highway were also added to improve intersection capacity.
Over the next three years the ministry and its partners are investing over $4.6 billion in priority transportation investments as part of BC on the Move, the province’s 10-year transportation plan.
