Construction tenders for three projects will be posted on BC Bid this spring to expand the Trans-Canada Highway to four lanes. 

The projects will include four-laning near Golden between Donald and Forde Station Road, the west approach to Salmon Arm between 1st Avenue S.W. and 30th Street S.W., and from Chase Creek Road to the western access into Chase.

“I’m happy to see these key BC on the Move projects are moving forward to the tender phase,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “Highway 1 between Kamloops and Alberta is a key trade and tourism route connecting our communities, and is vital to our economy.”

The Donald to Forde Station Road project is located approximately 20 kilometres west of Golden, and will expand 2.5 kilometres of highway to four lanes with improved access to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement inspection station. Construction is anticipated to start later this spring and finish in 2018.

The first tender for the Salmon Arm West project is for site preparation work that will include placing preload materials to compress soft soils and relocating utilities along the 1.5-kilometre- section from 1st Avenue SW to 30th Street S.W. Crews are expected to start this phase of construction in late spring and wrap up by fall.

The section from Chase Creek Road to Chase West access will include widening 3.4 kilometres of highway to four lanes, installing median barrier, and making safer accesses through construction of an interchange and frontage roads at the western end of the Village of Chase. Construction is expected to begin this summer and finish in 2019.

“Highway 1 is an important route serving provincial, regional and local traffic,” said Shuswap MLA Greg Kyllo. “Moving these projects one step closer to construction is great news for all the communities along the corridor both in terms of the jobs that will be created and the safety and reliability improvements that will be enjoyed by all travellers.”

The B.C. government is making record investments in modern, safe infrastructure projects throughout the province. In doing so, these construction projects are creating well-paying, family-supporting jobs. These investments are possible because of the fiscal plan of the B.C. government.

• The $54.3-million Chase Creek Road to Chase West project is fully funded by the Province of B.C. 
• For the Salmon Arm West project, the Government of Canada is contributing up to $48.5 million through the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component – National and Regional Projects, and British Columbia is contributing the remaining $114.2 million of the total estimated cost of $162.7 million.
• For the Donald to Forde Station Road project, the Government of Canada is contributing up to $7.27 million through the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component - National and Regional Projects. The Government of British Columbia is contributing the remaining $12.13 million for a total estimated project cost of $19.4 million.
