Delays of approximately 30 minutes are to be expected during the busy summer season while safety improvements are constructed through the Malahat Village, and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure encourages drivers to allow for extra travel time.
The delays experienced last weekend on the Malahat were longer than anticipated and the ministry is taking steps to reduce these as much as possible. With the heavier summer traffic volume, the ministry will no longer allow stoppages for construction during the day on Fridays. Ministry staff will also be closely monitoring traffic throughout each day to ensure delays are kept minimal due to construction.
Drivers can still expect intermittent closures of up to 5 minutes overnight 6pm-6am and during the day outside of the key commuter times from Monday through Thursday. While the majority of work is taking place outside of peak travel periods, certain activities such as blasting need to be done safely during daylight hours.
At this time, the travelling lanes are reduced to one lane in each direction 24/7 even when crews are not working due to the risk of falling rock, trees and other debris from the slopes that are currently being cleared in preparation for drilling and blasting.
The ministry appreciates the patience of all travellers as these improvements are delivered in a way that keeps both the crews and the public safe.
