Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills
The following statement from Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training, celebrates the one-year anniversary of tuition-free Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning programs and the launch of UpgradeBC.ca:
“This one-year anniversary of tuition-free Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning programs is about removing barriers and investing in learners who are ready to take the next step to pursue their goals and be part of building the best B.C.
“We have launched a new resource, making it easier for people throughout B.C. to find tuition-free upgrading programs close to home.
“UpgradeBC.ca provides information to help British Columbians find upgrading programs in their community. We want people to take advantage of the tuition-free programs that can launch them on their paths to a brighter future.
“Today, over 18,000 students are upgrading their skills and getting the credentials they need to find careers they love or continue their journey to higher learning.
“Students and educators told us that tuition fees blocked ordinary people from advancing their opportunities. We listened and took action, improving their chances of success and their ability to participate in the workforce.
“Students like Alicia Bruyere now have one less obstacle. Alicia is enrolled in tuition-free upgrading programs at Vancouver Community College. Although she has a high school diploma, she needs to upgrade numerous courses to pursue her dream career as a nurse. Alicia has one term left before she can apply to the practical nursing program at the college, and hopes to go on to specialize in long-term or palliative care.
“Making post-secondary education and skills training more accessible and affordable to people like Alicia gives more British Columbians the tools they need to find good-paying, family-supporting jobs to thrive in our strong economy.”
- The restoration of funding for Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning programs is a component of the Confidence and Supply Agreement with the B.C. Green Party caucus.
