A new elementary-middle school is coming to Chilliwack’s growing South Side community to give students a better place to learn.

Rob Fleming, Minister of Education, has announced that the Province will provide up to $48.6 million to build a new, 930-seat K-8 school in south Chilliwack. The Chilliwack School District will contribute $5 million for the cost of the school. The announcement was made during the grand opening of the new 200-seat addition at Promontory Heights Elementary Community school.

“With a new school in a beautiful setting, families in Chilliwack’s South Side community will have the pleasure of sending their children to a modern learning environment that will give them the best chance to succeed,” said Fleming. “Chilliwack is one of the fastest-growing school districts in B.C., and we are making investments to match that growth to make life better for families.”

The new school will have space for 80 kindergarten students, 250 elementary students and 600 middle school students. Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2019, and the school is expected to be ready for students in September 2022. The name of the school will be selected by the Chilliwack Board of Education at a later date.

“This is an exciting time for the Chilliwack School District,” said Paul McManus, chair, Chilliwack Board of Education. “We want to thank the provincial government for making this much-needed investment in our students and our community. Our district has seen tremendous growth for many years and this new school is a great start for providing additional engaging learning spaces for many of our students.”

The new school will be built on property the Chilliwack School District acquired in June 2017, on Tyson Road near the Vedder River. The school will be surrounded by nature, including park space and trails with the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve nearby. It will feature a neighbourhood learning centre with space that will be used for child care programming.

Students throughout British Columbia are benefiting from record investments in safe and modern learning environments. The Government of British Columbia is making significant investments in education by adding more student spaces, accelerating seismic upgrades and purchasing land to build new schools.

Since September 2017, government has approved $352.6 million to add 5,560 new student spaces throughout the province to meet its commitment to reduce the need for portables in fast-growing communities. In total, government has announced more than $708 million for school capital projects, including seismic upgrades, new and expanded schools, and land purchases for future schools.
