Smoke originating from the Comstock Lake wildfire, about 100 kilometres west of Hixon, has drifted north and is now visible throughout the Prince George area.

The increase in smoke is due to a shift in the wind direction that is pushing the smoke north. This smoke is expected to linger in the area for the next few days.

This fire is currently the largest wildfire in the Prince George Fire Centre and is estimated to be 1,100 hectares in size. No communities or structures are currently threatened by this fire. 

Detecting new wildfires in smoky conditions can be challenging. Anyone who sees open flames or a distinct column of smoke should call *5555 on a cellphone or 1 800 663-5555 toll-free as soon as possible and provide as much detail as possible.

Smoke concentrations can vary widely depending on wind activity, fire behaviour and changes in temperature.
