As a result of work by firefighting crews and recent rainfall, a series of active wildfires on northern Vancouver Island are now considered to be under control.
The Quinsam Complex wildfires are not expected to grow any larger and they no longer pose a risk to public safety. This complex consists of over 50 active wildfires located between Campbell River and Port McNeill.
Successful suppression operations have prompted the reopening of the Atluck Main Road and all roads that make up the Alice Lake Loop between Port Alice and Port McNeill. The Keogh Main Road and the Merry Widow Main Road have also been reopened, and all recreation sites that were affected by those road closures are now open.
- The Atluck Main Road is located west of Atluck Lake and east of Tahsish-Kwois Provincial Park. Due to rain and wind events over the last few days, there is a strong likelihood that downed trees or branches are lying across this road. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution when using this road.
- Where wildfires have burned in areas near forest service roads, the public is asked to not stop in those areas due to potential risks associated with falling trees and debris.
