Premier John Horgan has issued the following statement to mark the 70th anniversary of United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

“Human rights are the foundation upon which all other rights and freedoms are built. On International Human Rights Day, we reflect on the hard work required from all of us to defend and champion human rights, here in B.C. and around the world.

“On this day last year, we released a report that included 24 recommendations for the re-establishment of B.C.’s human rights commission. A year later, we’re proud to have passed legislation to establish a new commission that reflects the diverse and inclusive province we are so lucky to live in.

“Human rights are not simply given — they have been fought for, and won, by people throughout history. Rights are also not guaranteed, so as we celebrate today, we are also reminded that we must continue to stand together, defend human rights and fight every day for equality for all.”
