Crews have made significant progress in excavating rock to widen the highway, and have re-established the second northbound lane on Highway 1 through the Malahat Village in time for the higher traffic volumes anticipated for the May long weekend.
On long weekends, there will be two northbound lanes and one southbound lane from Friday afternoon through Monday evening. For non-holiday weekends, the second northbound lane will be open Friday afternoon through Sunday evening. It will re-close during the remaining weekdays as required, so crews can continue to work in these areas until the project wraps up later this summer.
Travellers should continue to expect delays of up to 20 minutes and intermittent stoppages outside of peak periods while construction is ongoing.
Drivers are advised that there are more police on the roads enforcing the construction speed zones, and are reminded to use caution and obey the posted speed limit of 60 km/h at all times.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure thanks motorists for their continued patience during construction of these safety improvements through the Malahat Village.
