A new inspection facility is being built in Delta, which will improve working conditions for Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) staff, speed up inspection times for truck drivers, with a goal of boosting safety for everyone travelling on B.C.’s highways and roads.
This covered facility will be built at the existing weigh scale at 8150 Nordel Way, near the south end of the Alex Fraser Bridge. It will provide a central Lower Mainland location to inspect all mechanical components of commercial vehicles in a safe, dry, well-lit area, and be able to accommodate two commercial vehicles at a time. One of the major benefits will be a large training area, for up to 25 staff to learn practical job skills, allowing CVSE to further develop their training program.
“This inspection facility will assist the ministry’s CVSE officers in their ongoing efforts to improve safety for the commercial transport sector, and people on our highways,” said Ravi Kahlon, MLA for Delta North, on behalf of Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “The new building will provide a controlled inspection area that will assist in day-to-day operations, and allow CVSE officers to process inspections quicker and more efficiently.”
Vehicles involved in a crash can also be brought to this secure facility, to assist police with conducting post-crash investigations in a timely manner.
Approximately 300 trucks per hour currently go through this weigh scale, and 13 CVSE officers are dedicated to the site and surrounding roads and highways. An additional seven CVSE officers are based at this location, but monitor other assigned areas, via mobile patrol, including the Trans-Canada Highway, Sea-to-Sky Highway, roads north of the Fraser River and TransLink’s major road network.
A $1.6-million contract has been awarded to MRC Total Build LP of Langley to complete the project. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2018, and finish in June 2019.
