As a result of today’s fatal accident on Highway 1, all northbound and southbound drivers who were wanting to travel over the Malahat are being detoured via the Pacific Marine Circle Route, until further notice.

Northbound traffic can access the Pacific Marine Circle Route by exiting Highway 1 at the Millstream Interchange, onto Veterans Memorial Parkway, and then travelling along Highway 14 via Port Renfrew.

Southbound traffic can access the Pacific Marine Circle Route via Highway 18 through Lake Cowichan.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure staff are working closely with local RCMP in support of its investigation into the accident. With regards to fuel spilling from the vehicle, the ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to assess the situation and conduct the necessary clean up.
