Work is starting on Monday, Sept. 17, 2018, to improve safety for people travelling to and from Port McNeill on Highway 19.
The intersection at Highway 19 and Campbell Way, known locally as “The T”, is being reconfigured to give drivers a clearer view of vehicles turning on and off the highway.
“The signs are up. Work has started at 'The T' intersection of Highway 19 and Campbell Way,” said Shirley Ackland, mayor of Port McNeill. “We are happy to see improved safety at our town’s entrance.”
“For too long, residents of Port McNeill have had serious safety concerns at the entrance to their town,” said Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “I am relieved to see this important project getting underway, as it will boost safety for everyone in the area.”
The project will raise the elevation of Highway 19, just east of the Campbell Way intersection, allowing increased visibility around the intersection. In addition to elevating the highway, the project will include the installation of six more lighting fixtures to improve nighttime visibility.
Construction is expected to be complete by the end of October 2018. Drivers are advised to watch for workers and obey all construction speed-limit signs.
Hazelwood Construction Services Inc. of Nanaimo was awarded the $1.57-million contract for the construction.
