Drivers are advised to expect delays and winter conditions when travelling on sections of Highway 1 as heavy snowfall has hit the region.

Ministry staff and maintenance contractors have snow plows out in full force and will continue to monitor weather reports to maintain the safest driving conditions possible.

A travel advisory is in effect for the Revelstoke to Golden section of Highway 1, which is expected to get up to 15 centimetres of snow over the next 24 hours.

Additionally, highways 5 and 97C could receive up to 10 centimetres of snow overnight, along with short squalls causing poor visibility tomorrow.

Winter tire regulations went into effect yesterday. People travelling on highways in the Southern Interior and North must equip their vehicles with winter tires with a minimum tread depth of 3.5 millimetres.

For mountain passes and rural highways, mountain/snowflake tires offer the best traction in winter driving conditions, while M+S tires are appropriate for most south coast highways.
