The new R.E. Mountain Secondary school has opened, giving Langley students a modern, engaging and inspiring learning environment that will serve families for decades to come.  

“The first day of school is always a busy and exciting time for students, especially when they are walking through the doors of a brand-new school for the first time,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Education. “With the growth we’ve seen in Langley, we’re working hard to keep adding new spaces so more students can have the best educational experience possible.”

R.E. Mountain Secondary has capacity for 1,700 students and features a modern design with flexible classrooms and amenities fit for 21st-century learning and collaboration. These include an outdoor learning space and amphitheatre, two gymnasiums and an open-style auditorium, as well as access to the Township of Langley’s artificial turf fields.

The new school also eliminates the equivalent of about 30 portables in the Willoughby Slope neighbourhood.

“We’re thrilled to welcome students, staff and families to this beautiful new school on the Willoughby Slope,” said Megan Dykeman, chair, Langley School Board. “We appreciate the ministry’s support and look forward to continuing to work alongside government in our commitment to creating an innovative, inspiring and unified learning community.”

Since September 2017, government has announced an additional $51 million to add capacity for more student spaces in Langley for a new elementary school in the South West Yorkson neighbourhood, and a land purchase for a new elementary school in the Latimer neighbourhood.

These investments are part of government’s plan to reduce the need for portables as solutions to growth in B.C.’s fast-growing communities, with $620 million for more than 10,000 new student spaces announced in the last two years throughout the province.

To continue this momentum, Budget 2019 includes a record $2.7 billion for seismic upgrades, new schools and expansions, in addition to land purchases for future schools.
