The BC Wildfire Service and the Tk’emlups Forestry Development Corporation plan to conduct a six-hectare prescribed burn near Goose Lake, near Lac Le Jeune Road and about nine kilometres south of Kamloops.
This prescribed burn could begin as early as noon on Friday, May 3, 2019, with timing dependent on weather, site and venting conditions. Ignition will proceed only if conditions are suitable and will allow for quick smoke dissipation.
BC Wildfire Service staff will carefully prepare, control and monitor the fire at all times to meet predetermined land management objectives. Smoke may be visible from Kamloops and other nearby communities.
The Goose Lake burn is being done to:
- assist with prescribed fire research;
- encourage regeneration in Douglas fir stands; and
- promote ecosystem restoration.
This low-intensity surface fire will mimic a naturally occurring ground fire and remove pine grass, small branches and other combustible material to aid with future replanting and improve forage for wildlife.
