The Arctic cold front currently moving through the Northwest Fire Centre has brought cooler temperatures and rain to most of the region.

BC Wildfire Service firefighters are working to demobilize firefighting equipment and structural protection units, which are large-scale sprinklers, associated with fires in the Cassiar Fire Zone. This is due to a downturn in fire activity and because the fires are no longer threatening any structures.

As a result of the lower wildfire activity, the evacuation alert and evacuation order that was in place for the Southwest Tagish Lake fire has been rescinded.

Updates for some of the more prominent wildfires in the Northwest Fire Centre are provided below:

Southwest Tagish Lake fire (R90881)

• This fire is about 40 kilometres west of Atlin and covers about 1,200 hectares.
• Due to decreased fire activity, firefighters have demobilized hose lines and water supply equipment from the fireline.
• Wildfire officers will continue monitoring this fire in the coming days, and the BC Wildfire Service will keep working closely with homeowners during this period.
• As of Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019, Emergency Management BC rescinded an evacuation alert and evacuation order associated with this wildfire. For more information, visit the Emergency Management BC website:

Barrington River fire (R91233)

• This fire is about 50 kilometres west of Telegraph Creek and covers about 4,600 hectares.
• It is burning about 25 kilometres from a fishing camp at Tahltan Lake, where structures have been outfitted with structural protection units.
• The deployment of these structural protection units will be assessed in the coming days and they may be demobilized due to the downturn in fire activity.

Volcano Creek Complex

• The Volcano Creek Complex consists of six fires that are burning about 40 kilometres west of Bell II.
• All six fires are under control.
• Wildfire officers from the Cassiar Fire Zone continue to monitor these fires.

2018 Alkali Lake fire (R91947)

• This fire originated five kilometres west of Telegraph Creek in 2018.
• Nine holdover fires within the original fire perimeter, which smouldered underground over the winter, range in size from less than one hectare up to 40 hectares.
• All of these fires are being monitored, but they are exhibiting little or no fire activity at this time.

Mehan Lake Fire (R51309)

• This fire is about four kilometres west of Bell II and covers about 58 hectares.
• This fire is under control and firefighters are no longer on-site.
• The BC Wildfire Service will continue to monitor this fire.
