Premier John Horgan has issued the following statement recognizing Muharram, the Islamic New Year:
“Today, Muslim communities throughout B.C. and around the world will mark the beginning of a new year. The holy month of Muharram is a time for reflection and remembrance, prayer and mourning.
“For many Muslims, Muharram is a time to set goals and intentions for the new year, both spiritual and personal. For others, it is a time for fasting, introspection and offering gratitude.
“Muharram reminds us all of the importance of justice, respect and community, and that together, we can build a stronger B.C. and a better future for everyone.
"To all those observing Muharram in British Columbia and throughout the world, I offer my best wishes on the new year.”
