Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) personnel have a new facility in Delta to help streamline commercial vehicle inspections and add training capacity to improve safety for people travelling on B.C.’s roads.

The facility was officially opened by Garry Begg, MLA for Surrey-Guildford, on behalf of Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, with George Harvie, mayor of Delta.

“It’s important to have confidence that the commercial transport truck next to us on the highway is operating safely and is mechanically sound,” said Trevena. “This new inspection facility will help the ministry’s CVSE officers in their ongoing efforts to improve safety for the commercial transport sector, and keep our roads and highways safe for everyone.”

The new facility is at the existing weigh scale on Nordel Way, near the south end of the Alex Fraser Bridge. It provides a dry, well-lit area to help CVSE officers process in-depth mechanical inspections on commercial vehicles more efficiently.

“Our association places its highest priority on safety, and any improvement to the enforcement of safe practices, like this new inspection facility, is a benefit to our industry,” said Dave Earle, president and CEO, BC Trucking Association. “I look forward to the government’s continued investment in enforcement, road safety and infrastructure for the commercial transport industry.”

The facility is large enough to accommodate two commercial vehicles at a time, with a training area for up to 25 people. Vehicles involved in a crash can be brought to this facility to help police conduct post-crash investigations in a timely manner.

Approximately 300 trucks per hour pass through the Nordel weigh scale, with 13 CVSE officers dedicated to the site and surrounding roads and highways. An additional seven CVSE officers are based at this location and monitor commercial vehicle safety in other assigned areas via mobile patrol, including the Trans-Canada Highway, Sea to Sky Highway and roads north of the Fraser River.

The project was constructed by MRC Total Build LP from Langley. The contract’s value was $1.6 million.
