Following significant damage caused by recent heavy rainfall, a portion of the Cowichan Valley Trail has been closed indefinitely due to unsafe conditions.
A major washout has occurred on the Cowichan Valley Trail, resulting in a closure between the Holt Creek Trestle and 64.4 Mile Trestle. The impacted area will be fenced off shortly, with appropriate signage posted at major access points to alert trail users.
Ministry staff will carry out an assessment of the area to determine the extent of the damage. They will make the necessary repairs to reopen the trail section as soon as it is safe to do so.
The ministry thanks people for their patience during the closure of this popular trail and will advise the public when it has reopened.
The Cowichan Valley experienced more than 440 millimetres of rainfall in January 2020, which is over 225% of the climate normal. A significant portion of that rainfall occurred within a 36-hour period.
