The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure plans to tender repair work for a section of Highway 14 at Parkinson Hill, just east of Port Renfrew, in the coming weeks.
People using Highway 14 in the Port Renfrew area are advised that significant repairs are required, with overnight highway closures necessary during construction.
The highway has been reduced to a single lane of traffic since November 2018 after a significant rainfall resulted in a slope failure. The current plan to address the slope failure is to first build a 220-metre-long retaining wall, followed by significant deep road-base repairs along a 500-metre section of Highway 14.
The work will be done overnight to minimize the impact to traffic. The ministry intends to close Highway 14 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. nightly, except for Saturday and Sunday nights, for a duration of about six months while the retaining wall is built. Similar closures would also be required in early 2021 as the road-base repairs are completed. During these closures, accommodations will be made for emergency access.
The ministry is advising key area stakeholders of project details, including First Nations, local governments and emergency services.
The project will go to tender in the coming weeks. With a successful tender, construction could begin this summer, with completion by March 2021. Further details and the final traffic management plan will be made available to the public prior to the start of construction.
