Salmon Arm project breakdown

The Province has committed $1.04 billion to upgrade Highway 1 between Kamloops and the Alberta border over the next three years under Budget 2020.

The Highway 1 four-laning project will improve safety and reliability for people travelling along this corridor.

  • The total budget for the Salmon Arm West four-laning project is $184.7 million. This includes up to $31.4 million from the Government of Canada under the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component of the New Building Canada Fund.
  • This is a higher-volume section of Highway 1. It carries approximately 15,500 vehicles per day on average, with peak daily volumes exceeding 21,000.
  • Approximately 11% of the average daily traffic are heavy trucks and commercial carriers moving between communities, the Lower Mainland and other provinces.
  • BC Infrastructure Benefits will provide employment and training opportunities for this project. It anticipates approximately 30 to 50 worksite employees to be hired, and estimated apprenticeship and training targets to be between 8% and 18%.

Below is an update on the segments included in the Salmon Arm project:

1st Avenue SW to 10th Avenue SW

  • 2.2 kilometres of widening to four lanes with a concrete median barrier
  • construction of a new Salmon River Bridge
  • construction of an interchange, frontage roads and a multi-use pathway

10th Avenue SW to 10th Street SW

  • This segment runs through the Adams Lake Indian Band’s reserve.
  • Government has been working collaboratively with Adams Lake Indian Band on the reserve land acquisition.
  • This segment is a priority, with work expected to begin in 2023.
  • This section includes 1.1 kilometres of highway widening and intersection and frontage road upgrades.
