Projects receiving funding from the Clean Coast, Clean Waters initiative

Misty Isles Economic Development Society (MIEDS):

  • The MIEDS was established in 2008 on Haida Gwaii to co-ordinate efforts between island communities and pursue joint economic development activities.
  • The MIEDS project aims to remove about 200 tonnes of marine debris from the shorelines on Haida Gwaii in partnership with the Haida Nation. The project will clean up approximately 400 kilometres of shoreline and create 146 jobs.
  • Funding: $2.3 million

Spirit of the West Adventures (SOWA):

  • Spirit of the West Adventures has been offering guided sea kayaking trips in British Columbia for more than 25 years. It has leveraged this experience to support shoreline cleanups for the Sierra Club and doing debris collection while on tour.
  • The Spirit of the West project will focus on marine debris removal in the Discovery Islands with SOWA acting as a project manager and community liaison to provide expertise. They will clean up between 200 and 400 kilometres of shoreline. The project is expected to create 33 jobs.
  • Funding: $563,000

Campbell River Association of Tour Operators:

  • The Campbell River Association of Tour Operators supports and promotes safe, sustainable adventure tours in Campbell River. Tour operators offer adventures for land, water and air.
  • The Campbell River Association of Tour Operators’ project will remove marine debris, garbage and used fishing and aquaculture gear from about 350 kilometres of shoreline near Comox, Courtenay and Campbell River. This will be done in partnership with the K'omoks First Nation. The project aims to create 61 jobs.
