Grace Lore, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity, has released the following statement in celebration of Mother’s Day:
“Mother’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate, reflect and appreciate the mothers, grandmothers and nurturers throughout our province.
“They say it takes a village to raise a child, and for a year, the pandemic has meant moms have cared for their families and those they love, old and young, without their village.
“Being apart from our community of support and those we care about is difficult, especially on days of celebration like today. I, like most of you, haven’t seen many of the moms I love most for months. As a mom of two young kids, I know mothers have taken on a lot of care work – and a lot of worry – during this time.
“So for all the mothers and maternal figures out there, regardless of your age, background, gender or expression – for those who have family by birth or by choice, for the foster and adoptive moms, for the grandmothers, big sisters, aunties and mentors, we thank you. Thank you for your care, for your commitment to your family and for doing your part to keep your children and community safe. In so many ways, you are the original essential and front-line workers.
“To that, I want to express my personal gratitude for the support, thoughts, well wishes and kindness my family has received from so many people throughout British Columbia and around the world as we face a complicated health crisis with my youngest child. We would not have such a great team if it weren’t for the health professionals, doctors and front-line staff who have stepped up during this time and are currently working with us. I am so very thankful for the support of our public health-care system, our essential workers and the help of so many.
“Mother’s Day can be hard for those who have lost their mothers or for people with more toxic relationships. If you’re struggling, know there is free 24-7 counselling available for students in B.C. (kindergarten to post-secondary). For more information, download our app Here2Talk: https://here2talk.ca/home
“Let’s take this day to be kind to ourselves as mothers, celebrate our strengths and keep space for our struggles.
“Take care, stay safe and have a very happy Mother’s Day!”
