Facts about the financial services sector in B.C.
  • In British Columbia, there are:
    • more than 26,000 licensed real estate professionals;
    • 42 credit unions with more than $72 billion in assets;
    • about 4,000 mortgage brokers;
    • 677 pension plans with about $158 billion in assets; and
    • more than 200 insurance and trust companies.
  • BC Financial Services Authority (BCFSA) is a self-funded Crown agency focused on sector regulation and consumer protection.
    • BCFSA replaced the Financial Institutions Commission in November 2019.
  • The Real Estate Council of British Columbia and the Office of the Superintendent of Real Estate will continue as regulators of the real estate sector until Aug. 1, 2021.
