Premier John Horgan has issued the following statement in celebration of India’s 75th Independence Day:
“I am pleased to commemorate the 75th Independence Day for India, the world’s largest democracy.
“At midnight between Aug. 14 and 15, 1947, India gained independence from British rule and became an independent country.
“India celebrates Independence Day on Aug. 15, as do Indian-Canadian communities throughout British Columbia and around the world.
“This 75th Independence Day is being marked by special events and celebrations all over the world and in British Columbia.
“British Columbia’s connection with India is longstanding and is, above all else, about people. Canadians of Indian origin have made countless contributions to our province.
“On behalf of all British Columbians, I send my best wishes to all those celebrating India’s Independence Day, here in British Columbia and around the world.”
