Premier John Horgan has issued the following statement marking the beginning of Navratri:
“Today, the festival of Navratri begins for Hindus here in British Columbia and around the world.
“Celebrated over nine nights and 10 days in autumn, Navratri honors and gives thanks to Hindu deity Durga, the feminine energy and her nine forms. On the 10th day, the festival of Vijayadashami or Dussehra is celebrated, which symbolizes good triumphing over evil and marks the beginning of preparations for Diwali.
“Navratri brings together families and friends to pray, take part in traditional forms of dancing like garba and dandiya, and enjoy many other traditions passed down through the generations. While this year’s celebrations may once again look different, know that the joyful spirit of Navratri remains as strong as ever.
“On behalf of all British Columbians, I send best wishes to everyone celebrating.
“Shubh Navratri and happy Dussehra!”
