Work is progressing well on the Chase Creek Road to Chase West project, which expands the Trans-Canada Highway near the Village of Chase from two to four lanes, making travel safer for people and more efficient for trade.

People can now view the design for the Chase West to Chase Creek Bridge section that will also increase safety and reduce traffic congestion in the region. The ministry invites people to go online for more information and to see 3D animations showing the route.

The ministry is following the advice and orders of the provincial health officer to keep British Columbians as safe as possible and help to stop the spread of COVID-19. As such, no in-person information sessions will take place. Instead, people can view the latest information online: www.gov.bc.ca/bchwy1-chase

For many years, people who live and work in Chase have been asking for a solution to traffic issues. The Chase four-laning project will increase safety, capacity and reliability and will provide safer connections to local roads and businesses.

Below is a project breakdown:

Chase Creek Road to Chase West

• 3.3 kilometres of highway widening
• upgrades to highway intersections and frontage roads
• construction of a pedestrian underpass and multi-use pathway
• construction is underway

Chase West to Chase Creek Bridge

• 1.6 kilometres of highway widening
• grade-separated interchange at Brooke Drive
• extended improvements on Brooke Drive to Shuswap Avenue
• detailed design work and consultation are ongoing, and work is expected to get underway later this year

This project is being delivered through the Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) and is designed to maximize opportunities to develop and grow the skilled labour workforce in the province. The CBA prioritizes hiring and re-hiring local workers, Indigenous peoples, women, people with disabilities and members of other under-represented groups who are qualified to do the work in a safe, welcoming environment. It increases opportunities for apprentices to work on site and gain the experience they need to move toward completing their certification.

Provincial construction sites have protocols and policies in place following the requirements of the provincial health officer to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. These measures include physical distancing and other protocols to ensure worker and public safety.
