Commercial drivers on the Lower Mainland are benefiting from time and fuel savings, thanks to the Weigh2GoBC program and cutting-edge technology.
The ministry has recently installed weigh-in-motion strip sensors in all six lanes of Highway 91, southbound toward the Nordel Inspection Station, including the on-ramp from Cliveden Avenue and the counterflow lane. This allows commercial drivers, who are registered and approved for the Weigh2GoBC program and pass a credential check, the opportunity to bypass the Nordel Inspection Station. The sensors weigh, measure and screen vehicles for safety requirements at highway speeds.
The Weigh2GoBC program allows commercial carriers to bypass Weigh2GoBC inspection stations (weigh scales) if they get the “green light” to go ahead. The technology, combined with more modern facilities, helps the industry operate more efficiently.
Eleven stations participate in the Weigh2GoBC Program, and industry enrolment consists of 488 carriers and more than 5,000 vehicles.
It is estimated reduced driver times and fuel costs have saved the industry more than $49 million. These include more than 1.7 million litres in fuel savings as a result of not idling through the stations and a reduction of over 3.2 million kilograms in greenhouse gas emissions.
The Weigh2GoBC program contributes to the CleanBC mandate to reduce harmful emissions from the transport of goods. CleanBC is a pathway to a more prosperous, balanced and sustainable future. It supports government’s commitment to climate action to meet B.C.’s emission targets and build a cleaner, stronger economy for everyone.
Commercial truck drivers play a role in maintaining the supply chain by delivering essential goods during the COVID-19 pandemic. The drivers ensure people around the province continue to have access to the items they need, including food and medicine. This is another reason why it is important to help drivers with strong safety records get to where they need to go in less time.
Quick Facts:
- Weigh2GoBC is a network of weigh-in-motion and automatic vehicle identification-equipped stations.
- The technologies check vehicle safety compliance and can allow vehicles to bypass inspection stations (weigh scales).
- Once a vehicle gets a “green light” at one station, vehicles found in compliance can bypass all Weigh2GoBC-equipped stations for the next 24 hours, subject to random reporting. The program is free to all B.C.-plated commercial vehicles.
- Commercial drivers wanting to participate in the program need to register with Weigh2GoBC.
