The Government of British Columbia plans to widen Highway 1 between 216th and 264th streets to improve safety and regional access, and is looking for public input to inform the final project design.

Public engagement is open and runs through March 19, 2021. During this time, people can review and comment on details of the project design, including:

• widening 10 kilometres of Highway 1 to accommodate eastbound and westbound high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes in the median between the 216th Street and 264th Street interchanges;
• construction of a new crossing at Glover Road, which will include dedicated 2.5-metre wide cycling lanes on either side and a separate two-metre wide sidewalk;
• reconfiguration of the existing 232nd Street interchange and the replacement of the existing crossing, including a three-metre wide multi-use pathway on either side; and
• replacing the existing railway crossing immediately east of Glover Road.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this public open house is online only in a StoryMap format. This format allows people to review interactive images of the project and provide feedback on its design and safety enhancements.

The Province is committed to the continued widening of Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley. The project to widen Highway 1 between 216th and 264th streets is the next phase in this expansion, with the widening between 202nd and 216th Street completed last fall.

By widening the highway to add HOV lanes, the project will help ease traffic congestion and support the transportation network by making it safer and easier for people and goods to move throughout this growing region.

This work will benefit those living in the valley and those who rely upon Highway 1 for inter-community travel. While the ministry finalizes the project design, preliminary work will get underway this spring, including localized tree clearing and the pre-loading of soil.

The Province of B.C. is partnering with the Government of Canada and Township of Langley on this highway improvement project.
