The Province is planning for future improvements to Highway 1 between 264th Street and Whatcom Road, and public engagement is underway to help determine the full scope of the project.
“We recognize the importance of Highway 1 to our regional, provincial and national economy, as well as to the quality of life for Fraser Valley residents,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Upgrades to the highway between Langley and Abbotsford will keep goods moving smoothly, while making it faster and easier for people to get to and from work so they can spend more time with their families.”
The first step in the project is to identify what improvements to the Highway 1 corridor are most important to people who live, work and travel in the Fraser Valley. People are invited to read the Discussion Guide and participate in a survey between June 1 and July 6, 2021. The feedback will be used to help inform the vision, objectives and scope of the project as it is developed over the coming months.
“As one of British Columbia’s most critical transportation corridors, Highway 1 will become even more important as economic activity recovers and as more and more people choose to live in the Fraser Valley,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of State for Infrastructure. “We need to ensure that Highway 1 is able to facilitate the movement of people, goods and services – now and well into the future.”
Improvements being considered for the corridor include:
- adding high occupancy vehicle capacity in each direction;
- reconfiguring or replacing the Peardonville Road and Bradner Road underpasses;
- improving access and infrastructure for affordable and environmentally beneficial modes of transportation such as active transportation (walking, biking and rolling), transit, electric vehicles and car sharing;
- facilitating efficient goods movement through improvements such as truck climbing lanes, and truck staging and parking areas; and
- reconfiguring or replacing existing interchanges at 264th Street, Highway 11 and Whatcom Road.
Future improvements to Highway 1 between 264th Street and Whatcom Road are part of the Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Program, the Province’s strategy to improve Highway 1 in the Fraser Valley to better serve the growing region and the more than 80,000 motorists who use the highway between Langley and Abbotsford every day.
