A new traffic signal is operational and increasing safety for people at Exit 51 on Highway 19 and Highway 4A.
Exit 51 on highways 19 and 4A, where the Inland Island Highway meets the Alberni Highway, has had increasing traffic over the years with many people travelling to Coombs and through to Port Alberni, Sproat Lake, Tofino and Ucluelet. The ministry had previously reviewed the safety and performance of the intersection and found full signalization of the intersection was warranted to improve public safety.
A new traffic signal was installed at this location to increase safety and efficiency for drivers travelling this route. Construction was completed June 2. The lights became operational June 3.
The design included making this spot safer for cyclists and pedestrians. Cyclists will benefit from having a controlled intersection transition and cross onto Highway 4A.
Drivers are reminded to obey construction zone speed limits and the direction of traffic control personnel.
