Rock scaling planned to start today for Highway 4 at Cameron Lake Bluff will now begin Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at 9 a.m., as weather conditions were not conducive for the scaling work to take place.
Given its complex nature, rock scaling must be completed during good weather and daytime hours. Sustained wind in the afternoon prevented the scalers from being able to safely work on the rock. Work will commence Tuesday morning when winds are expected to subside.
The highway remained open today, with single-lane-alternating traffic moving through. The detour route between Lake Cowichan and Port Alberni also remains open.
Beginning Tuesday, the highway will be closed for two periods daily, from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and again from 1:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. There will be no closures overnight or on weekends, including on the B.C. Day long weekend. This work is required before the highway can be safely reopened to two-way traffic, expected by mid-August, 2023.
