Ways government is helping people with everyday housing costs
  • Budget 2024 provides $950 million for BC Builds, a new program to leverage underused land, faster development, low-interest construction financing and grants to increase housing options for people and families with middle incomes.
  • New legislation is tackling persistent permitting and zoning challenges, facilitating faster delivery of the housing people want and need.
  • The B.C. home flipping tax will apply to homes sold within two years of purchase, beginning on Jan. 1, 2025, discouraging speculators in search of a quick profit from driving up prices in neighbourhoods.
  • In November 2023, B.C. expanded the speculation and vacancy tax to 13 new municipalities, for a total of 59 communities.
  • Residential property owners in the new communities added will need to declare for the first time in January 2025 based on how they used their properties in 2024.
  • Since 2017, nearly 78,000 homes have been delivered or are underway throughout B.C. as a result of provincial investments and partnerships.
