Amna Shah, parliamentary secretary for anti-racism initiatives, has released the following statement in celebration of Korean Heritage Month:
“It’s an honour to recognize October as the very first Korean Heritage Month in British Columbia, a significant milestone that acknowledges the remarkable social, cultural, economic and civic contributions of Korean Canadians in our province. This designation provides a meaningful opportunity to celebrate these achievements, deepen understanding and inspire future generations through education and community engagement.
“Korean Canadians have enriched the fabric of British Columbian society in countless ways – through cultural festivals, artistic innovation, civic leadership, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and so much more. This month gives us a chance to reflect on those contributions and engage with the vibrant heritage and traditions that continue to shape our communities.
“I encourage all people in British Columbia to explore the many events, stories and opportunities happening throughout October that honour Korean heritage. Whether it’s attending community celebrations, engaging with educational programs or simply connecting with one another, each of us can participate in raising awareness and promoting inclusion.
“Under B.C.’s Multiculturalism Act, we commit ourselves not only to acknowledging diversity but to actively fostering intercultural understanding, respect and unity. The introduction of Korean Heritage Month reinforces this commitment and reminds us that our province grows stronger when we uplift the voices and histories of all cultural communities.
“In this spirit of celebration and recognition, I extend my gratitude to Korean Canadian individuals, families, organizations and leaders who have helped build a more resilient, dynamic and inclusive British Columbia. Let us move forward together with pride, curiosity and solidarity.”
