Premier David Eby has issued the following statement marking Passover:
“Tonight at sundown, Passover begins for the Jewish community in B.C. and around the world.
“Commemorating the Exodus of Jewish people from slavery in ancient Egypt, Passover is a sacred holiday celebrating freedom and the triumph over tyranny.
“Families will be celebrating the first night of Passover with the Seder, a ritual feast that includes specific foods representing different parts of the Exodus story, as well as readings from the Haggadah and songs and prayers.
“Passover reminds us of the values of resilience, solidarity and compassion. Our government condemns the rise in antisemitic acts that followed the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attacks in Israel, and we are committed to ensuring that our province is safe and welcoming for people of all faiths and backgrounds. Today and every day, our government stands against antisemitism, and hate and discrimination in all its forms.
“To everyone celebrating, I wish you a peaceful and happy Passover. Chag Pesach Sameach!”
