Premier David Eby has issued the following statement marking Rosh Hashanah:
“Tonight, at sunset, Jewish communities in British Columbia and around the world will celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
“Rosh Hashanah, the first of the High Holidays, marks the beginning of the Days of Awe. Families will gather to pray, share traditional meals, and eat apples and honey. The shofar will be sounded.
“The New Year offers an opportunity to reflect on the past and to look toward the future with renewed optimism.
“British Columbia is a province of great diversity where we should always celebrate the shared values that unite us.
“Rosh Hashanah is being celebrated at a time when the Jewish community in British Columbia and around the world has been targeted by a growing rise in antisemitism. We stand steadfast with the Jewish community in the fight against such hatred.
“Jewish Canadians have played an important role in British Columbia’s and Canada’s history, and Rosh Hashanah is an opportune time to recognize their valuable contributions.
“To all celebrating Rosh Hashanah, I wish you a happy and healthy new year!
“L’shanah tovah u’metyukah!”
