Premier David Eby has issued the following statement celebrating Chanukah:
“As the sun sets tonight, Jewish families here in B.C. and around the world will celebrate the start of Chanukah.
“Over the next eight days and nights, friends and families will gather together to light the candles of the menorah, recite blessings and exchange holiday gifts. Many people will celebrate with singing and playing dreidel, a traditional game that is played to celebrate Chanukah.
“Known as the Festival of Lights, Chanukah commemorates the Maccabees’ rebellion against religious persecution and reclamation of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem more than 2,000 years ago. Today, the lights of the menorah represent the miraculous lamp used by the Maccabees to rededicate the temple. Having enough oil for only one day, the lamp nonetheless burned for eight days.
“As this year draws to a close, Chanukah reminds us of the values of resilience, courage and solidarity. This cherished holiday is being celebrated at a time when Jewish communities in Canada and around the world have been suffering a rise in antisemitic acts.
“Our government condemns these targeted acts of discrimination, and we are committed to ensuring that our province is safe and welcoming for people of all faiths and backgrounds.
“To all those celebrating, I wish you a joyful and peaceful holiday. Chanukah Sameach!”
