Pathways to high-priority careers
  • Since 2017, ABE and ELL courses have been offered tuition-free to domestic students in B.C. The total number of domestic students enrolled in tuition-free ABE/ELL courses between 2017-18 and 2023-24 was 85,220.
  • The ABE/ELL pathways to high-priority careers programs is a targeted initiative within ABE/ELL programming. In 2022, the ministry initiated a call for proposals for post-secondary institutions to apply for funding to develop innovative pathways to support ABE/ELL students in their transition from ABE/ELL courses to high-priority post-secondary programs. The 2025-26 funding is the fourth round of one-time funding to support this initiative.
  • Over the past three years, the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills has invested:
    • 2024-25: $3.5 million to support 22 pathways at 12 public post-secondary institutions and Native Education College (NEC).
    • 2023-24: $3.8 million to support 26 pathways at 12 public post-secondary institutions.
    • 2022-23: $3.5 million to support 26 pathways at 11 public post-secondary institutions.
  • From 2022-23 to 2023-24, 994 students participated in the ABE and ELL pathways to high-priority careers programs.
  • The final reports for 2024-25 are not due until September 2025.
