Preparations are underway to rebuild sections of street above the future Broadway Subway stations.
At the start of the project, five temporary bridges called traffic decks were built at street level to keep traffic moving along Broadway during underground station construction.
Beginning at the Mount Pleasant Station in January 2026, crews will dismantle and remove the traffic deck that supports the roadway between Main and Quebec streets. They will then reinstall permanent utilities, cover the station roof in soil and repave the street. Pedestrian access to all businesses, services and residences will remain open throughout this work.
To complete this process as quickly as possible, vehicle traffic will be temporarily detoured around the block where work is taking place. After approximately four months, vehicle traffic will return to this section of Broadway with one lane in each direction for another four months as reconstruction is finished.
This approach minimizes the length of time that residents, businesses and commuters will be affected by the work. In summer 2026, this block of Broadway between Main and Quebec streets is scheduled to have four lanes open to traffic, wider sidewalks with the sidewalk on the south side of Broadway reconnected to Main Street and most of the safety fencing removed.
More information about the removal of the remaining traffic decks will be shared before work begins.
The Broadway Subway project is a 5.7-kilometre extension of the Millennium Line from VCC-Clark Station to Broadway and Arbutus with six new underground stations. Once completed, it will provide fast, frequent and convenient SkyTrain service to B.C.’s second largest jobs centre, health-care services, an emerging innovation and research hub and growing residential communities.
The new line is scheduled to enter service in fall 2027.
