Premier David Eby’s Chief of Staff, Jim Rutkowski, will take leave from his position to receive medical treatment following a recent cancer diagnosis.
Cheryl Oates will serve as acting chief of staff during his leave.
“Jim is an invaluable leader in our government and brings his determination and love for people to every aspect of the job,” Premier Eby said. “I’m glad he is taking time to get treatment and to focus on his health and recovery. Cheryl is a trusted and experienced leader, and I have full confidence in her ability to guide the Premier’s Office at this critical time for the province.”
Rutkowski was appointed chief of staff in November 2024 following the provincial election. He has previously served as chief of staff to former B.C. finance minister Carole James and principal secretary to former Alberta premier Rachel Notley.
Oates previously served as Notley’s chief communications adviser and brings strategic senior advisory experience spanning the private and public sectors in multiple countries. In 2024, Oates served as provincial campaign director in the Saskatchewan provincial election. She teaches political communications at the Max Bell School of Public Policy at McGill University in Montreal.
