Premier David Eby has issued the following statement in honour of the month of Ramadan:

“As the crescent moon rises tonight, Muslims in British Columbia and around the world will begin observing Ramadan.

“In this sacred month, we are reminded of the importance of surrounding those who are hurting with compassion and care. As the community begins this month of prayer and reflection, our hearts will remain with the community of Tumbler Ridge, which has suffered an unimaginable tragedy. We will hold the victims, their families and the entire community in our thoughts and prayers.

“Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, fasting, prayer and acts of generosity. Families and communities come together to share meals at iftar, support those in need and celebrate the Muslim values of compassion, gratitude and service to others. Now more than ever, we are grateful for these acts of love.

“Ramadan reminds us of the resilience of communities facing challenges, both near and far. Inspired by this spirit of perseverance and solidarity, here in B.C. we remain committed to standing against Islamophobia, hate and discrimination, and to building a province where everyone feels safe, respected and included.

“During this month of renewal, let us consider how we can strengthen the bonds within our communities, build understanding across faiths and backgrounds, and lift each other up with kindness and respect.

“I wish all those observing Ramadan a month filled with peace, reflection and hope.
