Premier David Eby has issued the following statement marking Lunar New Year:
“Tonight, people in B.C. will join millions of celebrants around the world to gather together and enjoy Lunar New Year’s Eve reunion dinner. Lunar New Year begins tomorrow with the first new moon of the lunar calendar, and is a traditional time of joy, community and renewal.
“This year, we are beginning the new year with heavy hearts. As we say goodbye to the Year of the Snake and welcome the Year of the Fire Horse, we are thinking of the people of Tumbler Ridge, who endured an incomprehensible tragedy last week.
“We hold in our hearts the families and friends of the victims, the first responders, and the teachers and students who are facing unimaginable grief and loss.
“Lunar New Year is a cherished time for people to gather with loved ones, enjoy traditional foods and celebrate with friends and neighbours. Children often receive a gift of ‘lucky money,’ a red envelope containing cash to symbolize good luck and prosperity.
“Throughout February, people will be celebrating by watching parades, participating in festivals and attending community banquets. From the Vancouver Chinatown Spring Festival Celebration to the OCCA Spring Lantern Festival in Kelowna to the Lunar New Year Parade and Blessing of Merchants in Victoria – there are festive events for everyone in communities across B.C.
“Lunar New Year is a great opportunity for British Columbians to learn more about the diverse traditions of Asian communities throughout our province and is a reminder of the incredible contributions that they have made to B.C. for generations.
“To everyone celebrating, I wish you a happy Lunar New Year and a prosperous Year of the Fire Horse.
“Kung Hei Fat Choi. Gong Xi Fa Cai. Chúc Mừng Năm Mới. Saehae bok mani badeuseyo.”
