Premier David Eby has issued the following statement recognizing Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan:
“With the sighting of the new crescent moon, the holy month of Ramadan has come to a close, and Muslims here in British Columbia and around the world are joining with friends, family and community to break their fast and begin three days of celebration for Eid al-Fitr.
“After a month focused on prayer and fasting, Eid is a time of joy and connection, and an invitation to practise generosity and charitable giving, so everyone in the community has what they need to share in the occasion.
“While this is a joyful holiday, any celebration that brings people together also reminds us of those who are far away. I know many Muslim British Columbians will be thinking about friends and family who are threatened by growing conflict and insecurity in the Middle East and around the world, even as they celebrate this joyful occasion.
“I join them in wishing for peace and safety for those they care for and love, and a world where everyone can celebrate together without fear of violence.
“May the next three days be filled with joy and blessings for all who are celebrating.
“Eid Mubarak!”
