Premier David Eby has issued the following statement marking Pride season:
“June marks the beginning of Pride in British Columbia, in many parts of Canada and around the world.
“Pride is a time to celebrate the many victories gained by 2SLGBTQIA+ people over generations of activism. It’s an opportunity to learn about the vibrant history of the queer and trans-gender communities in Canada, from the 1971 gay-liberation protests in Vancouver and Ottawa, to the 2005 legalization of same-sex marriage in Canada. And it’s a time to bolster and support those who continue to fight for dignity, safety and human rights.
“From Nanaimo to Smithers to Kamloops to Nelson, communities throughout the province will come together to mark Pride throughout the summer.
“Whether it’s Pride in the Park in Invermere, the Memorial Drag Ball Game in Victoria or Pride Roller Skating Night in Prince George, there are many opportunities to celebrate, connect and show support.
“At a time when queer and trans-gender communities are facing growing challenges and harmful policies in some parts of Canada and beyond, Pride is an affirmation that those spreading hate and discrimination have no place in British Columbia.
“To everyone celebrating this year, Happy Pride!”
Jennifer Blatherwick, parliamentary secretary for gender equity, said:
“Pride season is a powerful reminder that across B.C., two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-gender, queer, intersex and asexual people deserve to live, love and thrive without fear. It is a time to honour and embrace all people for who they are, especially those whose courage has shaped our province, and to recognize the vibrant communities that continue to enrich our shared life.
“As Pride events unfold in communities throughout British Columbia, we celebrate the diversity, resilience and joy that define this season and strengthen our province.”
