Premier David Eby has issued the following statement marking Canadian Multiculturalism Day:
“Since 2002, June 27 has marked Canadian Multiculturalism Day, an opportunity to honour the diversity of Canada. It is a day to celebrate our commitment to inclusion, shared respect and the advantages this brings us in a divided world.
“British Columbia is home to people of varied histories and backgrounds, including Indigenous Peoples who have lived on this land for generations. Today, our province is home to people from every nation on Earth. We are Canada’s most ethnically diverse province.
“Even as we honour multiculturalism, we do so knowing prejudice and discrimination remain a feature of daily life for too many British Columbians. Our government has introduced several anti-racism initiatives, including the Anti-Racism Data Act, the Racist Incident Helpline (with supports available in more than 240 languages), and the inaugural Anti-Racism Action Plan, which sets out actions to address the systemic barriers Indigenous and racialized people face when accessing government services. As well, a new provincial K-12 Anti-Racism Action Plan was introduced three years ago to empower students and educators to identify and act against racism and discrimination in schools.
“Diversity is the cornerstone of our strength and vibrancy, as we have seen as co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup. Our shared values and commitment to freedom and democracy help to make Canada and British Columbia the envy of the world.”
