Niki Sharma, Attorney General, has released the following statement marking Jewish Heritage Month:

“We are proud to recognize May as Jewish Heritage Month in British Columbia, a time to honour the history, resilience and lasting contributions of Jewish communities in our province.

“Since the 1800s, Jewish Canadians have played an integral role in the development of B.C.’s communities. In 1863, Congregation Emanu-El was established in Victoria, making it home to the oldest synagogue still standing today in Canada.

“Today, British Columbia is home to a thriving and growing Jewish population, supported by vibrant cultural institutions, community organizations and synagogues that enrich communities throughout the province.

“As we celebrate Jewish heritage, we also stand ready to respond to the unacceptable rise in antisemitism seen around the world.

“Earlier this year, our government introduced the Safe Access to Places of Public Worship Act to establish protection zones around places of worship, such as synagogues, so that people can practise their faith without fear or intimidation. Our government has also invested in the BC RCMP anti-hate crime unit and the racist-incident helpline, as well as other supports and resources, to tackle the rise of antisemitism.

“Education remains one of our most powerful tools to counter hatred and misinformation, which is why Holocaust education is mandatory for students in B.C. schools. Learning the lessons of history helps ensure they are never repeated.

“This Jewish Heritage Month, I encourage all people in British Columbia to learn about Jewish history and culture, to stand with their Jewish neighbours and to join us in building a province where every person can live free from hate.

“Together, we are stronger.”
