After working as a stay-at-home mom to her three boys for several years, Carol Pesce decided she wanted to go back to school. Originally from Italy, Carol Pesce moved to Victoria 10 years ago.
“With my youngest starting Kindergarten in September, I realized I would have more time on my hands,” Pesce said.
The seven-month Health Care Assistant program through Camosun College was particularly appealing as it allowed her to juggle her responsibilities as a mom, while achieving an education.
“This program was perfect because I was able to meet my education and family’s needs. I volunteered with the health sector before, so it was an easy decision for me to move into this field,” she said.
Through a combination of in-class learning and clinical placements, students like Carol are given the opportunity early-on to get a feel for what it’s like to be a health care assistant. In just 29 weeks, a full-time student learns how to advocate for their patients, provide compassion and assist them in their day-to-day lives.
Carol recently finished her orientation at Saanich Peninsula Hospital and has already found success in her field. Three days after graduating from the Health Care Assistant program at Camosun College, Carol was offered a job at Saanich Peninsula Hospital.
“It was overwhelming, because I didn’t think it would happen this fast. On the other hand, it was rewarding because it shows there is a need. It felt good to set my mind to do something and to do it well.”
The health care sector is one of the fastest growing and largest sectors in British Columbia. The province is funding programs like the Health Care Assistant program at Camosun College to ensure students graduate ready for these in-demand jobs.
“This program prepared me for the workforce. After my kids, this is going to be my next amazing journey.”
