Did you know BC shipped almost $4 million worth of fresh cherries to China in 2013? This is only the beginning as it was the first year fresh cherries were exported to China from British Columbia’s Okanagan orchards and local growers want to build on this momentum. In June 2014, Minister Letnick led a BC delegation on a China trade mission with a theme of building markets for BC foods. The tour was a success and the highlights included an agreement between Canada and China that will eventually led to full, unimpeded access for this premium quality fruit.
With the new agreement, BC cherry growers estimate up to $20 million dollars in new revenue annually over the next few years.
Minister Letnick recently visited a Kelowna-area cherry orchard to celebrate with BC’s cherry industry as another shipment of fresh cherries was being packed for China.
