VICTORIA - BC Ferries celebrated the first steel cut on its second new intermediate class ferry in Poland recently, marking another huge step in the construction of three new dual-fuel LNG Ferries capable of running on liquefied natural gas.
LNG is a cleaner burning fuel source than traditional marine diesel fuel. The use of LNG will result in the reduction of approximately 9,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, or 1,900 passenger vehicles off the road annually.
The first ferry is scheduled to arrive in British Columbia in August 2016.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone:
“BC Ferries has responded to government’s encouragement to explore the use of LNG by going with dual fuel propulsion - LNG or marine diesel - for its three new intermediate-class ferries, currently under construction. BC Ferries also has plans to convert the two Spirit-class vessels, the biggest fuel-users in the fleet, to LNG in 2017/18. These moves to LNG will lower fuel expenses for BC Ferries and support our guiding principles of keeping ferries affordable, efficient and sustainable.”
