In 2008, four-year-old Alexa Middelaer was killed by an alcohol-affected driver in Delta. In 2010, the Province set a life-saving goal in Alexa’s memory by introducing tough, Immediate Roadside Prohibitions for people who drink and drive. The new measures were instrumental in reducing the alcohol-related death toll on B.C.’s roads by 52%, saving an estimated 260 lives to date. These achievements aren't possible without the overwhelming support and dedication of law enforcement officers, who passionately uphold the law and deter people from drinking and driving.
Alexa's Team is a program that recognizes the dedicated RCMP and Municipal law enforcement officers in B.C. who make an extraordinary contribution to reducing the number of drivers affected by alcohol from B.C. roads every year. This year, 246 officers from throughout the province are being named to the 2015 Alexa’s Team. On May 25, 2016, 29 officers from the northeast region were in Prince George to be recognized for their tireless work. Recognition events were also held in Metro Vancouver, Victoria, and Kelowna.
B.C.'s tough drinking and driving penalties make a big difference in saving lives and helping British Columbians get home safe, by taking alcohol-affected drivers off the road immediately and by acting as a serious financial deterrent from repeating the behaviour.
Alexa, her family, and the many others whose lives have been impacted by drinking and driving are the reasons for B.C.’s continued focus on protecting public safety with the Immediate Roadside Prohibition program.
